reaping chocolate

Okaaaaaaaaaaay! Who’s hungry? I am! I’m usually just a coffee-for-breakfast gal, but this morning I would not turn away breakfast if it were available. Alas, there is no breakfast buffet in my office.  But, I have hopes that someone may come in with doughnuts. It could happen. Truth is, it happens a lot. Most weeks, I need a sign that says “DON’T FEED THE RECEPTIONIST”. And, if I weren’t currently working on increasing my thigh circumference, I would make just such a sign.

My friend Leigh Ann, whose office is just around the corner from my reception area, gets all bent out of shape because for some reason I very often get offered my pick of whatever treats our co-workers may bring in, and despite her proximity to my desk, no one seems to make it around there to her with the chocolate-covered pastry du jour!

I keep telling her it’s a spiritual law that God has set into time and space: you reap what you sow. I sow chocolate, therefore I reap chocolate. People here know that I have a stash of chocolate in case of emergencies. I periodically have been known to share chocolate with those who seem to need a little pick-me-up. Afterall, I feel that chocolate soothes the savage beast within. Chocolate smooths out the wrinkles in our days! (Too bad it won’t smooth ‘em out of my face.)  Anyway, point is, I’m quite sure that the law of reaping and sowing is why people naturally think of me when they bring in chocolate covered doughnuts into the office.  My harvest (of chocolate and other goodies) has been bountiful. People bring food to me all the time, so that MUST be the reason why. Well, I mean, it certainly isn’t because I appear undernourished.

I had to respond to this one too! You know I luva the chocolates and at my house I am one of six chocolate lovers. I have yet to have a day that I turn around from sneaking in the cabinets to indulge that I don’t hear, “what’s in your mouth mommy?” One day I’ll miss that……well except maybe when chocolate is involved!

Ohhhhhhh! Been there done THAT! Hey, when the kids ask you what’s in your mouth after you’ve been sneaking chocolate, try grinning (a closed-mouth grin of course, to avoid leaking chocolate), and then say, “My tongue. My tongue is in my mouth.” If that doesn’t work, you might try, “My teeth. Got a mouth full of teeth.”

Truly, this method is highly ineffective, though. I find that the times I’ve been in the very same situation, my kids are ridiculously smart and down-right relentless about these sorts of things. Nonetheless, it’s entertaining to everyone…at least for a minute or two. (But you’ll pro’ly still end up having to share your chocolate stash.)

This is so funny because last night Lu had a Hershey bar and was trying not to have to share it with me and Ka. However, I was able to convince her that since Mother’s Day is the weekend, it was time to start the celebration now. I informed her of all the things I had SACRAFICED for her over the years so what is a little chocolate for her dear ole’ mom. Needless to say, she decided to share with me. Sharing with her sister was quite as easy, but she finally decided it was the “right” thing to do. Didn’t take long for that Hershey bar to disappear.
