diary of a dream

Okay, I dreamed last night that my first cousin Laurie and I, along with Maggie– were out driving in a big car that belonged to Laurie’s parents.  The scenery was gorgeous. Reminded me of riding around all throughout the acreage of the Biltmore Estate in July. Lush pasture land, rolling hills, winding country roads. So pretty! Laurie was driving. We were just rolling along just fine, then we curved around and down to the left, and found ourselves in a river! No more road!

So at first, we were like acting surprised, but somewhat jovial about our predicament. Like, “well all right then! Now what?” Almost laughing at our situation.  But our emotions soon shifted. Laurie became kinda panicky. But, I wasn’t. (That’s how I know it was a dream! Ha!) I just took control!  So, I looked at her and said something like, “Okay, we don’t have time to panic. We’ve gotta move! Now!”

Water was filling the car up RAPIDLY.  I said, “Okay, we’ve got to get the baby up and get all of us outa here.” I grabbed Maggie up into my arms and braced myself briefly for the feat ahead. Then I said, “Okay, here we go! Just open the doors and swim for all you’re worth! Let’s go!”

So we did. We opened the doors, and of course water came pouring in like a huge wave.  But, we swam to the top, got Maggie to the surface, and we could all breathe again!  We got Maggie back to where the road ended and the water began and told her to stay put. Next we knew we had to get my aunt and uncle’s car out of the river before it was too late.  They didn’t know we had the car!

So, Laurie and I waded back out into the water, and during that part of my dream the river wasn’t any deeper than our legs. We just got on either side of the car and picked it up like it weighed five pounds.  Then we proceeded to turn it on it’s side and pour all the water out of the windows.  It was a cinch!  Then we carried the car back to the road.

We were so nervous that it wasn’t gonna crank. But, we all got in, and I looked over at my cousin and said, “Try it.”

The engine didn’t even sputter. It cranked right off the bat! So, we opened the windows and drove off! On our way we commented that we hoped the interior of the car would all dry out before we got back to where Laurie’s parents were.  It was at that point, that I kinda felt like we might have been camping with them or something. It seemed like when we were driving back to them, that wherever they were, it was somewhere recreational…somewhere outside.

We were so relieved that the car had cranked, and that it all went so well when it certainly could have ended so tragically.

THE END

No, Cousin Smarty Pants. (Meet my cousin Joel, everyone. Laurie’s brother.) But,my arms ARE sore from totin’ the car across the river. You know everything seems lighter in water, but I guess since my arms are nearly 40 years old, maybe I can’t handle that much of a work out! Even in my dreams!
