daddy daily volume 21

Yesterday afternoon, Daddy was transferred to the skilled nursing facility in our county. He will receive physical therapy there five days a week. (We originally thought he’d only get physical therapy three days a week, so we are thrilled it’s to be more often!) He has a room mate who is a retired preacher, but we haven’t met him yet.

The dietary director at the new facility is a former cafeteria lady at the middle school at which Daddy was principal when he retired!!! She came to see Daddy right away and told him, “Mr. Sims! I’m gonna take care of YOU! I’ll make you ANYTHING YOU WANT TO EAT!!” And, Mama said his supper was delicious country cooking, and that Daddy ate EVERYTHING on his plate for the first time in weeks!

He wasn’t very talkative today; he was very tired. I took the girls to see him. I know it was a shock for them. They managed just fine during our visit. But, Jessye cried quietly on our way home. The first thing she commented when we got back in the car, and with a lump in her throat: “That was hard.” And shortly after that she began to cry…but, quietly— so that Maggie (who was behind her in the back seat) wouldn’t hear her.

Daddy wasn’t able to say much, but he did wink at the girls, and he replied to their “I love you”s with “I love you, too!” But, he didn’t say anything else. But honestly, it was all he could do to hold his eyes open he was so sleepy.

Mama was there when we visited. So she tried to help fill in the gaps and was very upbeat in an attempt to help with the emotional hardships of the girls seeing their Granddaddy in this shape for the first time. When he was in the rehab facility before, he said he didn’t want them to come yet. But, I just couldn’t stand it anymore. So I took ’em to see him. It has been over a month, afterall! And, they needed to better understand why I have been so absent from home much of the time after work for over forty days.

Friends, thank you for your prayers. Soooo much! And, please KEEP PRAYING! And, I’ll keep posting updates.

Much love,

Wow, that must have been so hard for Jessye. I’m sure it’s hard for Maggie too, but Jessye understands it more. I really feel for you and what you must be going through right now. You must be exhausted, mentally and physically. How is Terry’s dad doing now? We’ll be praying for all of your family. Love you much!

I gave an update on JR to his fellow commissioners at yesterday’s mental health meeting, and they all signed a get-well card. Of course they all are very concerned. James has been an outstanding member of this board and is highly respected by the staff and commissioners.
Again, thank you for the daily progress notes. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
