daddy daily volume 27

Daddy is getting stronger physically, as well as somewhat stronger cognitively. He is walking much steadier. They started him using a cane instead of a walker yesterday. Trouble is he uses the cane for a pointer. Yesterday while walking in the hall during physical therapy, he passed his room mate, Dan, and challenged him to a duel. (Nice to know he hasn’t lost his sense of humor!)

Yesterday there was a meeting with all physical therapists and nurses regarding Daddy’s case, and they all feel he is improving and will eventually (though not yet) be a candidate for being cared for at home.  They have asked Mama to stop coming in so early. They said she should wait until after noon to come in. This is because they want Daddy to come to grips with being able to do fine without her there, instead of relying so heavily upon Mama’s presence for him to be able to behave himself. Fortunately Mama has appointments this morning and tomorrow morning, so it will be easier for her to comply with the suggestions of the staff there today and tomorrow!

But, he’s doing better. And, we pray that will continue. Cognitively he is showing signs of improvement. But it’s not fabulous by any means. Like, two days ago he could not remember how to tell time. But, Mama was able to put him back on track with a little coaching.

He has gained 7% of his body weight back since he’s been in skilled nursing! This is wonderful. The dietician, who used to be dietician at one of the schools where Daddy was principal, said she’s figured out why he eats so much better for them when he dines in his room. She said she went out in the cafeteria and sat with him the other day to see how he does in that environment. While there, there was some sort of commotion somewhere else in the cafeteria. Daddy looked around, then he looked back at Mary Ann and said, “Did you see who started that?”  She said, at that point it clicked with her. When he’s in the cafeteria, he’s in principal mode. She said that Daddy always ate lunch at school early (before the kids), or late (after the kids). This was because when the children were eating lunch in the cafeteria, he was watching over their conduct!

Thanks for the report. Sounds like progress is being made. I just hope and pray that it continues. All of us who were former Principals know about the ruckuses in the cafeteria and we had to know who the little devil was that started it. It is the duty of the principal that we will not forget.

Remember our prayers are with you all and again we look forward to the updates.

A great report – glad to see him making these great strides. Oh, I knew principals just like him, too. That early lunch was important to toss back before “Pam arrived” in the cafeteria, ’cause there was gonna be some ruckus (sp?) when she got in there, fo sho! Keepin’ JR and the fam in our prayers, girlfriend!

Tracey, thanks for the update. I was hoping to hear before our monthly mental health board meeting tomorrow so I could make a report to the commissioners. Prognosis sounds much better. You all are much in our thoughts and prayers and we’re very hopeful for a recovery.
